Collaborating with employers to promote experience-based learning to students at the University of Central Florida
Challenge
How might we partner with potential employers to create mutually beneficial learning and career development opportunities?
Strategy
Two-pronged effort:
- Created cooperative education (co-op) and internship opportunities to allow practical work experience in specific majors, fielded over multiple or one semester, respectively
- Established externship programs to pair students with employers and alumni in a facilitated shadowing experience
Outcome
As institutions grow, high employability of graduates helps to maintain a quality reputation for the university and potential employers. In the undergraduate class of 2014-2015, 71% of UCF graduates found employment versus 65% of Florida public university graduates overall.
